Having a Voice: Involving People with Complex Support Needs in their own Plans

How can we work toward someone’s dreams when they aren’t able to tell us what they want? Is taking the perspective of the person’s guardian, lead staff or others good enough? Must we wait for someone to develop more clear communication before they have autonomy to express and see their dreams through? What if self-advocacy seems too difficult to teach or we don’t know how to start?

If you are a person that has the privilege of helping someone plan for and make changes to get closer to the life they see for themselves, and you are stuck, confused or unsure if it’s possible because of the difficulty of knowing, this may be helpful. Please join us for real-life examples and tools that you can take and use as first steps. Let’s work together to make accommodations and expand our toolboxes so that more folks can be at the center of their own lives!
