Ask The Arc: Preparing for the Next Generation of Support

If you have a loved one with a disability and have been thinking, or need to think, of who can be involved in their life as you age or are no longer there, the holidays can provide an opportunity to talk with the "next generation of support." Sometimes, families assume that a sibling will step in to care for a person with a disability when the parent can no longer provide care. Sometimes, they talk about this; sometimes, they don’t, and they often don’t include the person with a disability in the conversation. Many of those siblings or other next generation of supporters feel overwhelmed by the idea of stepping in. It is essential to talk with all future potential supporters AND individuals with disabilities about what it means to support a person with a disability. What are the expectations? What supports are already in place? Who all is involved? What does the individual want their life to look like? We’ll discuss that in our next "Ask The Arc" on Thursday, November 9, at 6:00 p.m. ET.
