The Market Need is Great
There are far more adult residents of Indiana with IDD than there are safe, affordable, supportive residential settings designed to support their right to a meaningful life. This situation is true for every state in the U.S. Indiana ranks number 5 behind AZ, CA, HI, and MS as the state with the highest percentage of HCBS Waiver recipients with IDD still living in their family home versus their own home, a host home or adult foster care home, or a group setting.
There were 155,713 people with IDD in the State of Indiana as of June 30, 2017, according to the In-Home and Residential Long-Term Supports and Services for Persons with Intellectual or Developmental Disabilities: Status and Trends Through 2017 report produced by the Residential Information Systems Project (RISP) of the University of Minnesota. Of that total, 40,207 were 18 years of age or older.
The number of individuals with IDD of any age in Indiana living with and being supported by caregivers age 60 and older as of fiscal year 2017 (latest available data) was 26,571 according to the State of the States in Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities report produced by the Department of Psychiatry and Coleman Institute for Cognitive Disabilities at the University of Colorado. This particular demographic can be considered at-risk due to the fact the caregivers may soon need caregiving for themselves.
OASIS is poised to meet this critical need. We formed in 2019 with the goal to create a pocket neighborhood with supportive neighbors, targeted programming and a Community Center. We have engaged knowledgeable consultants and advisors and have used the information gained from feasibility meetings with families to help create our Strategic and Business Plans. We launched our first program outings in late 2021 and are planning for more in 2022. Our next major goal is to find and acquire land.
